Doodling from the Utopiales* some time ago; while listening to Roland Lehouq disserting on the estimation of power output and energy consumption in popular science fiction movies. A very nice and funny way to introduce hard physic conceptualization and notions. And lab security protocols.
The quantity of raw energy required to produce an effect such as movement, heating or even disintegration (i.e. breaking stuff in small bits) differs widely from common intuition. Estimating the time needed to accomplish a task, thus the power required, gives a pretty good picture of the scale of the effect.
For instance : since no machine can reach a 100% efficiency, a tiny fraction of the power required to melt a steel door with a lightsaber is dissipated into the device. But this tiny amount is enough to roast a man alive.
Ergo : Jedi are fireproof**.
