For this illustration, I wanted to portray Darkstalker at the height of his power, standing above Jade Mountain as if the laws of nature themselves had stopped applying to him.

I imagined him manipulating the sky into a triple eclipse, covering the world in an ominous red glow. The result is a scene caught somewhere between a solar phenomenon and something far more unnatural.

Below him stands the Jade Winglet: Moonwatcher, Qibli, Winter, Turtle, Kinkajou and Peril. They are deliberately kept tiny compared with Darkstalker, not simply to show his physical size, but to emphasize the overwhelming scale of his power and presence.

I also wanted to keep parts of Jade Mountain visible beneath the red atmosphere, so the location would remain recognizable despite the clouds, darkness and intense lighting.

One of the biggest challenges was Darkstalker's silhouette. A nearly black dragon against an eclipse and a dark sky can disappear very easily, so I had to work constantly with the rim light and the warm glow behind him to keep his shape readable.

I usually tend to make my digital paintings too dark, so this time I deliberately pushed the lighting further. The scene is still dark, but Darkstalker himself is meant to remain clearly visible.

The goal was to make him feel less like a dragon standing on a mountain...

and more like something enormous standing above the world.
